"Cousins at Bodie Island Lighthouse"
"Cousins at Bodie Island Lighthouse"

20"x16" acrylic on canvas, 2017 ~ by Juliet Drake Hossain

During one of our family reunions, we enjoyed touring several lighthouses along the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  My two kids and their cousin paused on this platform in the grassland, and in that moment, a painting was born.

A labor of love and hope, celebrating the limitless potential of our daughters.  There is a world in which my brilliant girl belongs.  I am an artist, so I painted this world for her.

This piece was part of a personal challenge:  to paint quickly.  I usually paint with painstaking (but paradoxically relaxing) detail, in 1-2 hour bursts over a period of several months.  For this piece, however, I let go of my usual style and completed it within a couple of days.  Appropriate, then, that the perspective here is looking down upon the sleeping head of my infant son.  This precious time with a warm, heavy little body on my front, was indeed fleeting.
